“I mean, what other Arctic Fox shifter could there be? I thought I was the only one… Didn't Blair see that I was the last arctic fox shifter?” I heaved out a breath and buried my face in my hands.

Rhett wrapped his arms around me, and the bed shifted at the soft movement. “Baby, you're going to make yourself sick worrying about this.”

“But Rhett, that first human specimen said the last known shifter was my dad. At least, it was heavily implied. Plus, he said that my species was thought to be extinct.” A lump formed in my throat.

I watched the bullet go through Mom's head. I knew she died. But… I didn't see Dad die. I saw him get shot, and I heard the gunshots after I turned. He was still alive when I ran, and I could remember the fear on his face. For me. Not for himself.

Fisting my hand in Rhett's t-shirt, I sniffled, trying to keep the tears at bay.

He ran his hand up and down my spine. “We will figure out what the shifter meant, but she could also have just been spouting nonsense. She was dumb enough to try to kidnap you when you have seven mates, and one of them is literally at your side at every moment.”

“I know.” I pulled back and looked into his violet eyes. “It just sucks. I felt so alone when I was told I was the last of my kind, and to think it might not be true…”

He cupped my face and stroked his thumb over the apples of my cheeks. “You’re mine tonight. We’re going to talk about everything that you want to talk about, and we’ll stay up until you’ve gotten everything out.”

My tongue darted out to wet my lips as desire buzzed low in my abdomen. “What if I don't just want to talk? What if I want to take you up on your offer to use you to cope?”

His expression grew dark as his gaze flicked to my lips and back to my eyes. “Then we won't just talk. I can think of a lot of other things I'd like to do to you to help you cope. I had Blair increase the wards in this room. So, we’re safe.”

“Your room has the same wards as Rowan’s now?”

“Blair said that's what she did, and she even enchanted the locks on the door. No one can get in or out without us finding out.”

Comfort flushed through me. I loved how much Rhett cared about our safety. With as many times as his privacy had been violated, he deserved security.

A knock sounded on the door in three quick raps.

Rhett groaned as he bent forward and kissed my forehead. “Pretty sure that’s Alister. He knocks like that to let me know it’s him.”

“It is me. Come on. Let me in.” Alister's pouty voice carried through the door, and a giggle burst from my lips at the whine in his tone.

Rhett pulled back and got up, but I jumped off the bed and cut in front of him.
